"If the punchy, claustrophobic anti-sociality of tools in early lockdown proposed a particularly dark vision of the future, the Action for Dark Lives street uprising of the late spring believed like their wondrous opposite—another by which tools were answering and being organized by the activities on the floor, rather than those events being structured by and designed to the requirements of the platforms. This is something worth our time and commitment, something that surpassed our compulsion to write, something that—for a minute, at least—the Twittering Device couldn't swallow.

Perhaps not that it wasn't trying. As persons in the streets toppled statues and fought authorities, persons on the tools adjusted and refashioned the uprising from a block movement to a thing for the usage and expression of the Twittering Machine. The thing that was occurring off-line must be accounted for, defined, evaluated, and processed. Didactic story-lectures and photographs of properly stored antiracist bookshelves appeared on Instagram. On Twitter, the typical pundits and pedants sprang up challenging details for every single motto and justifications for every single action. In these matter trolls and reply guys, Seymour's chronophage was literalized. The cultural market does not only consume our time with endless stimulus and algorithmic scrolling; it takes our time by producing and marketing people who exist simply to be explained to, people to whom the world has been produced anew each morning, persons for whom every resolved sociological, scientific, and political controversy of modernity must certanly be rehashed, rewritten, and re-accounted, this time using their participation.

These individuals, with their just-asking questions and vapid start letters, are dullards and bores, pettifoggers and casuists, cowards and dissemblers, time-wasters of the worst sort. But Seymour's book implies something worse about people, their Twitter and Facebook interlocutors: That we want to spend our time. That, but significantly we would complain, we discover pleasure in endless, circular argument. That we get some kind of happiness from monotonous debates about "free speech" and "stop culture." That people seek oblivion in discourse. In the machine-flow atemporality of social media marketing, this may seem like no good crime. If time is an endless resource, why not invest a few ages of it with a couple New York Instances op-ed columnists, rebuilding all Western believed from first rules? But political and financial and immunological crises pile on one another in series, around the back ground roar of ecological collapse. Time is not infinite. None people are able to invest what's left of it dallying with the ridiculous and bland."
